Formica vs Compact Phenolic HPL: Which is Better for Washrooms?

Many confuse commercial "Formica" with "Compact Phenolic HPL" panels. Here we explain the technical and practical differences to help you choose the right material for your Saudi project.

Formica vs HPL Phenolic

What is Formica?

Formica is primarily a brand name that has become synonymous with thin laminates. It usually comes in thicknesses of 1-2 mm and is used as a veneer glued onto wood like MDF. It is completely unsuitable for direct use in bathroom partitions due to its reliance on wood, which rots with moisture.

What is Compact Phenolic HPL?

Compact HPL (High Pressure Laminate) is a completely solid panel consisting of dozens of layers of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin, pressed under extreme heat. Its thickness for bathroom partitions reaches 13 mm, and it requires no wooden core. It is highly durable, 100% waterproof, and impact-resistant.

Which is Best for Washrooms in Saudi Arabia?

Undoubtedly: Compact Phenolic HPL. Using wood-backed "Formica" in public washrooms means guaranteed damage within months due to moisture. Compact HPL, on the other hand, lasts for years with zero maintenance.

Why We Don't Sell or Recommend Formica

In our projects, we absolutely do not sell or use standard Formica. Our focus is exclusively on supplying and installing Compact Phenolic HPL systems. This ensures our clients receive a high-quality product that lasts for years and is completely unaffected by water, unlike Formica which requires constant maintenance due to wood rot.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Formica vs HPL Phenolic

Can I use Formica in washrooms?

It is highly discouraged to use standard Formica glued to MDF in public washrooms. Instead, use solid Compact Phenolic HPL.

Why does Compact HPL cost more than regular Formica?

Because Compact HPL is a completely solid, high-durability panel that needs no wood, is 100% waterproof, and has a lifespan of over 15 years, whereas Formica is just a thin veneer that needs wood support.
